A New Hope
We are in the middle of a huge healthcare crisis and our nation keeps getting sicker. It really doesn’t matter what condition you may have, the treatments are limited to potentially dangerous drugs, to be taken for life, or surgery. We are labeled with diseases based just on symptoms. But worse than masking the symptoms, we are neglecting the root causes, causing worsening of the underlying issues, but with new side effects that confuse the picture.
Five years ago Mary D. didn’t have a blood pressure problem. Now, it’s still high on two medications at max doses. Instead of just starting the third medication, we should be searching for what happened with her body that it can’t control the blood pressure anymore. It’s unacceptable that in the US 2 out of 3 baby boomers suffer daily with a chronic illness and 9 out of 10 feel their health is not excellent. Medications keep getting more expensive but the coverage keeps lagging. Sometimes we just accept it and think that it can’t change.
The main cause of bankruptcy in the US is medical bills, but 75% of the people had some form of insurance. Bottom line, not being healthy it’s affecting our quality of life, who we are and what we are able to do. How much more could we accomplish, if we had optimal health?
As physicians we tend to blame the symptoms on age, heredity or weight, but there are very specific reasons for the symptoms that should be investigated and addressed. In reality our bodies were designed to self-heal, but if we are either lacking the key ingredients, or have things interfering, how are we going to heal? If you are not feeling well, nothing else matters as much.
Our quality of life can be dramatically improved, regardless of our age. We all want to enjoy life, have energy, sleep well and be in control of our health. People don’t want to be a burden to their loved ones, and getting healthier is the best way to prevent that. But how to be healthier? Most people, sometimes even doctors don’t know that science is at a point in which we can guide the body to go back to healing mode. There is a whole new kind of medicine called Functional Medicine that focuses on addressing the roots of illness. This is done in a systematic yet simple approach, in which by understanding how all our organs interact, looking beyond the traditional testing, checking nutritional deficiencies inside our cells, repairing our gut, optimizing our brain function, balancing hormones, reducing inflammation, re-learning what to eat, minimizing stress, etc., we can gain back our control. By investigating further we can understand what was really going on with the patient and what to do about it. Sometimes medications might be needed and we need to see if that’s the case, or not. Being healthier and happier is easier than you think.
